"Working in the UK taught me that post-study life is not just about costs, taxes and work-life balance." I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University. After graduating, I transitioned into the workforce as an Applications Engineer based in Manchester where I worked for 2 years. Moving from student life to full-time employment in the UK was a significant adjustment. It was a major lifestyle change — managing tax, bills, and personal finances independently required discipline and careful planning. Despite the challenges, the post-study experience helped me grow professionally and personally, and gave me a clearer understanding of working culture in the UK. While salaries may look attractive on paper, high living costs and taxes can significantly reduce take-home pay, so understanding this early helps set realistic expectations. At the same time, the UK’s strong work-life balance, including up to 28 days of annual leave and respect for personal time, makes working life more sustainable and rewarding. Knowing both sides allows graduates to plan better and actually enjoy life beyond work.
